NEWS   P.R.   PRESS CONTACTS   CALENDAR

Many past conferences that should be on this page were lost during "the troubles" of Summer 2000. About a year's worth of past conferences are missing. On the other hand, who cares about past conferences? Here's what's coming up:

Coming Up

CNET Builder.com, New Orleans, 6-10 December 2000
Web Standards Panel featuring Zeldman, Dori Smith, Glenn Davis, Dan Shafer. Also: Zeldman on Artistry, Accessibility, and Standards: The Good News. He'll also moderate a panel on web standards, and co-host Open Mike Night with Glenn Davis.

Come and Gone

CNET Builder.com Live, New Orleans, 7 – 9 December
Web Standards: How Much Are Browser Incompatibilities Costing You?
Tuesday December 8, 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
If you could shave 20-25 percent off the cost of your Web projects, would it be worth the effort to do so? The lack of standards support in Web browsers is costing everyone money and is fragmenting the Web as a whole. Come hear what top Web developers, browser makers and other industry insiders have to say about the current problems with standards, and discuss the prospects for fixing them.

  Recent Events...

Microsoft-Netscape-WaSP Love Fest, AIP-SF, San Francisco, 1 December
The two giants of web browserdom hit the stage along with members of The Web Standards Project at a special meeting of the San Francisco Association of Internet Professionals.
Glenn Davis (Project Cool), Dan Shafer (CNET's Builder.com), Jeffrey Veen (Hotwired's Webmonkey) along with Angus Davis (Netscape's NGLayout Product Manager) and Mark Ryland (Microsoft's Director of Standards Activities) discussed browser standards support before a live (and lively) SF audience.
For those who missed it, CNET covered the event in a special article, with accompanying web-radio broadcast.

AIP-LA, Los Angeles – Tuesday 27 October
Featured speaker Craig Relyea covered the Internet from an entertainment point of view, followed by George Olsen, WaSP project leader, who spoke about web standards. The Olympic Collection, Banquet & Conference Center, 11301 Olympic Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, 90064. The event was free to AIP-LA members; $5 for non-members. (310) 575-4585 for upcoming AIP-LA events.

Systems, Munich, Bavaria, Germany – 19 – 23 October
The WaSP flew at Systems in Munich, courtesy of c't Magazine. Tomas Caspers and other WaSPs talked up standards at ct's Booth (No. 336 in Pavillion A4), which was expanded specifically to accommodate Tomas and crew. There was a presentation each day, along with informal chats and literature from the booth.

Fall Internet World, New York City
8 October 1998
Jeffrey Veen of Wired Digital and Dan Shafer of Builder.com were featured speakers about the problem of web standards: how we got into this mess and what we can do. The event took place Thursday, Oct. 8 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. The friendly folks over at Webmonkey sponsored the event.
Project Leader George Olsen also spoke about new steps being taken by WaSP and The Open Group (a vendor-neutral, international consortium of more than 200 members organizations) to encourage browser support for standards created by W3C and other standards bodies.

Web '98 Boston
23 September 1998

The Web Standards Project will held a gathering at Miller Freeman's Web '98 conference in room 104 of the Hynes Convention Center from 6-7:30pm. The event, sponsored by C|Net the Computer Network, featured WaSP speaker Steven Champeon. This was the first in a series of trade show events whose purpose was to bring together web developers and the web-using public. If you wish to help the WaSP with trade show events, see the Action Commitees page.

Silicon Valley Association of Internet Professionals
16 September 1998

WaSPs Glenn Davis, Dan Shafer, and Jeffrey Veen spoke at the Silicon Valley Association of Internet Professionals. From the literature:
"If you could shave 25% to 50% off the cost of web development, would it be worth the effort? The lack of standards support in web browsers is costing everyone money and is causing fragmentation of the web as a whole. Come hear what three top web development authorities from the three top web development sites have to say about this and learn about The Web Standards Project, a group of web developers who've said 'enough is enough' and are working to improve standards support beyond the lip service that the big two currently provide."

Bilism Conference, Istanbul
4 September 1998

Executive Steering Committee member Jeffrey Zeldman spoke at the Bilism Conference in Istanbul, Turkey. Bilism, whose name is a crossword from "knowledge" and "communication," is the area's largest computer conference, attended by over 100,000 mass media and internet professionals from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
In a lecture delivered in English, with live Turkish translation via headset, Zeldman discussed issues of web content and design, the WaSP position on standards, and the hazards of browser fragmentation. Zeldman's lecture was sponsored by the Istanbul daily newspaper Yeniyuzyil.

Seybold Conference
31 August 1998

WaSP steering committee member Tim Bray spoke along with Hakon Lie, Lauren Wood, and the Seybold moderator. Three of the four speakers mentioned the WaSP extensively, especially Tim, who even worked WSP banners into his presentation. Lots of pencil-scratching in the crowd as the URL was given to about 200 people.
